What did you think of this insert's coupons?

I wanted to remind you that you can call your local paper if you do not receive your paper, and ask them to make sure you are on the "deliver" list. You can also ask if they have drop boxes where you can pick up the papers. PLEASE do not take all the papers or worse, all the coupon inserts. I've had a number of people tell me this week that they either took a free paper or bought a paper, and then proceeded to take all the coupon inserts from the other papers. That in my opinion is stealing, and unfair to others who might be purchasing the paper for the coupon inserts.

If you are looking for extra inserts, ask your neighbours, friends or family, to put theirs aside for you if they do not use them. If you live in a condo/townhouse, my rule of thumb for taking more than 1 coupon insert is anytime after Sunday, if the papers are still there, then help yourself. Give others a chance to get their paper/coupon insert first but if they are still there Monday morning then they are a free-for-all, in my opinion. Check your communal recycling bin as they can be goldmines when it comes to coupon inserts. Also, please do not take coupon inserts out of the papers that are for sale at the stores or at the self-serve kiosks.

I frequent my local McDonalds or coffee shops and ask if I can have a couple extra inserts if no one is needing them and I've never been turned away. Most people just want to read the paper and the flyers/coupon inserts are left behind and happy couponers like myself are usually welcome to take a few home, saving them from the recycling bin.

Seventh Generation printable coupons

Seventh Generation has put out some printable coupons here! You'll have to create an account and sign in first to access the coupons. There currently are coupons for $1 off any laundry product (including detergent, chlorine free bleach and softener), $1 off any dishwashing product (liquid, powder or gel) and $1 off any diapers or wipes.

You can print each coupon twice (once at a time), and the coupons expire 30 days after printing.

Shop with MrsSmith - a lesson at LD

I was out in Burnaby today and decided to do a quick shop at LD - totally off the fly, with no preparation in advance. This was easy to do because I've read my flyers, and I knew what coupons I had. For all you newbie Extreme Shoppers, I promise that working out deals will get easier with time, the more you extreme shop, the easier it becomes. Plus, this deal was easy because I was not pricematching, I was just buying items advertised in the LD flyer.

I decided to work this deal:
- 2 free VH sauces
- 1 free Kelloggs cereal
- 6 free Knorr soups

Since these are food items, I knew there would be no tax, so I knew I would end up paying nothing after coupons.

So off I went with my items up to the customer service counter. I handed over my coupons and waited patiently to get my receipt.

I was surprised when the cs rep handed me back 3 of my coupons, each worth $1, and told me,"I can't take these, Ma'am, you'll have to use them next time."

I asked her why, as I had worked my deals and coupons so that they could all be used to get my balance to zero.

She said,"I can't let you have these for free."

I asked,"why not? I have coupons to go with these items to get them all free."

She then said again,"you can't get things for free. That's not how we deal with coupons here."

I calmly told her she was wrong and that their policy allowed the deals I was getting. She started to argue, and so I asked for the manager. All calmly, because I knew the policy, and I knew getting upset would not help.

She called for the manager, almost tapping her foot as she waited for an answer. When he came on the phone, she proceeded to tell him about the situation, almost as if she was reporting me. I watched her as she listened to what he said, and there was almost a 100% change in her facial expression. That was then I said a silent "thank you, Mr.Manager."

She got off the phone and rang in my coupons. I thanked her for checking and her attitude took a complete turnaround. She said she had to check to avoid getting into trouble. But I knew she had decided not to use my coupons because somewhere in her training she had been told,"the customer cannot NOT pay anything - they have to pay the tax." This is true especially in cases of overage where the coupons would cover the tax, which is not supposed to happen according to LD corporate coupon policy. But in my case, the items were food, and there was no tax. So she took it upon herself to not use some of my coupons so I would in effect have something to pay. But the problem with that is, where did one draw the line? I could have asked her,"why didn't you stop at $1, why did you stop at $3?" So obviously her method was flawed.

The point of all this rambling is that if you know your store's policy, you will always be ok. Treat the cashier/rep kindly because getting upset doesn't do anything. Having the store policy in writing in your purse will go a long way. Don't bother arguing - just take out the policy and refer to it. There is some chatter on the MrsSmith FB wall where there is currently some confusion happening at checkout so I thought today's post would be timely. I will say it over and over and over in class, but just in case you didn't hear it in class, I'll say it here again: "know your policy and treat the cashier kindly."

Just in case you are wondering how to get any store's policies - just contact them, and ask for the policy in writing (ie via email).

I ended up doing a second transaction at the same store with the same cashier, who rang me through with a pleasant and helpful attitude the 2nd time around. :)

HOT - Last day for cheap/free Mr.Clean!!

I love Mr.Clean products. Especially the Magic Eraser. My kids love them too and this mama especially loves the days when my kids decide that their bathroom needs a "Mr.Clean Makeover" - and then go to town scrubbing everything in sight.

This week's Walmart flyer expires today, and so goes with it the $2 price for Mr.Clean products. So if you are needing some Mr.Clean products, you have until the stores close tonight to get in on this great price.

I went to London Drugs and saved $2.60 PER spray/liquid and $1.49 per Magic Eraser right off the bat.

Then of course came the coupon savings which was $32!

I got 4 sprays, 4 liquids and 8 2-pack Magic Erasers for nothing but tax which was $3.84! Got to love Extreme Shopping! The (male) cashier was so awesome and said,"I really take my hat off to you," and even asked where to get coupons and of course I referred him here! :)

If I had walked into LD and bought all these off the shelf it would have cost me $73.29 (inclusive of tax) but instead I walked out only paying $3.84. That is a 94.77% savings! Of course, If there was no tax then I would have 100% savings.

Watch for a Michelina's coupon

There was a Michelina's coupon in my local paper today - it has a 50cent coupon on it and also a Scratch and Reveal coupon where you could win Free Entrees for 1 year. Mine turned out to be another 50cent off coupon.

Safeway deals - ends today!

Safeway's got a $1 milk coupon out in the local paper, and it expires tonight. So go get your milk - those coupons don't come out very often! Did you know you can freeze milk? You can, and it takes just the same as it would fresh. Just pour out a little before you freeze it to give it space to expand.

Also, I noticed there is a BOGO deal on Windex Trigger. With your $2 coupon this might be a pretty decent deal.

My sister in law is in town and came shopping with me today after taking a look at my stockpile. We went to RCSS and she got 14 items for wait for it, 3 cents. Yes, 3 cents!!! And that was including tax!

Her total would have been $76.16 (including tax) if she had purchased everything at full price. Instead, she used a Buy One, Get One (BOGO) coupon for the Scrubbing Bubbles, and used 12 $2 off coupons for the Glade. Because the candles were $1.44, she made .56cents PER candle, which went towards the Scrubbing Bubbles and tax. Her savings ratio is an incredible 99.96%!!!! How can you not be convinced that coupons are the way to go after that shopping trip??

Free Glade candles at RCSS!

You might want to check your local RCSS/Extra Foods, or any other store for that matter, as I believe it's planogram change time and lots of items are going on clearance to make space for new items.

Another great freebie (with coupon) this week are Glade candles. At my RCSS (Westwood Coquitlam), selected varieties of the jar candles are on clearance for $1.94, normal retail price is $4.


In last weekend's Red Plum flyer there was a $2 off any Glade product coupon. With this coupon, you would get the candle FOR FREE! Your mileage may vary (YMMV) as to whether you get the overage or not, as the item is $1.94 and the coupon is $2, the overage is 0.06. Usually RCSS will adjust down the coupon so you do not get the overage but your cashier may just scan it through at $2 and you would profit by $0.06! :)

There are other $2 Glade coupons out there as well, so now might be a good time to use them and stock up like I did. Don't worry, I didn't clear the shelves, when I left there yesterday there were still lots left. Little Mr.Smith wanted to have his picture taken and posted since his sister Miss Smith was featured on a previous post.


RCSS also had the diffusers and 3 wick candles for under $4 which is a great price, and if you have coupons for those items, you can use them against that sale price to get it even cheaper!

Working a deal - which one is better?

Today our "deal dilemma" is over Ziploc bags.
Recently I blogged about how you could use the $2 Ziploc coupon that was in the March 6 Red Plum coupon insert to get free Ziploc Evolve packs at Zellers. What is interesting is that I noticed Zellers has the regular Ziploc 50 pk bags for $2.49 regular price, and the 100-pk bags on sale at 2 for $5 or $2.50 each. So keep your eye out for the sales to get the best price for whatever it is you are looking for.

In this case, you could buy the Evolve 50-ct bags at $1.99, use your $2 coupon and pay nothing but tax.


Or you could buy the regular Ziploc 50-pk at regular price for $2.49 and use your $2 coupon and snag it for $0.49.


Or, you could buy one regular 100-pk bags for $2.50, use your coupon and get it for .50cents.


Which deal would you work? Any guesses to what I did?
